Investigating the "therapeutic power" of dolphins. Ethnography of a research

peer reviewedThe paper presents the story of a research that meant to experimentally test the therapeutic effect of dolphins on autistic children. The paper shows how a purely experimental plan affects the results and leads to the disappearance of the "therapeutic effect". It also shows that the dolphins themselves are not responsible for the therapeutic changes. Instead, it is the whole system, with its relational complexities, its emotional dimention that is responsible for the ill-called "therapeutic effects". The results invite to some thinking about the evaluation of animal assisted therapies.L'article raconte l'histoire d'un projet de recherche destiné à tester scientifiquement l'hypothèse de l'effet thérapeutique de dauphins sur des enfants atteints d'autisme. Il montre comment le schéma expérimental mis en place affect les résultats - c'est-à-dire qu'il fait disparaître "l'effet thérapeutique" de l'animal. Ceci indique que ce ne sont pas les dauphins eux-mêmes, mais plutôt l'ensemble du dispositif, qui est responsable des améliorations observées chez les enfants. Ceci invite à réfléchir sur les dispositifs d'évaluation des thérapies utilisant des animaux.Projet Auti-dauphi
